Frequently asked questions
The durability of upholstery fabrics is measured by the Martindale test (friction cycles). It is recommended to choose a fabric with at least 15,000 cycles for home furniture and over 30,000 cycles for public spaces. For heavily used furniture it is better to choose a fabric with 50,000+ cycles. In addition, the composition of the fabric should be taken into account - polyester and acrylic fabrics are generally more durable than natural materials.
Contact adhesives or neoprene-based adhesives are most commonly used for bonding synthetic leather. They ensure a quick and strong adhesion. Drying time is usually 15-30 minutes to initial adhesion, complete drying in 24 hours. It is important to choose an adhesive that is flexible after drying to allow the material to move naturally.
High-quality car interior materials are specially treated with UV protection. However, to maintain the quality of the material, it is recommended to:
- Regular cleaning with special car interior cleaners
- Use sun visors when parking in the sun
- Treat every 3-6 months with special protective products
- Avoid strong chemical cleaners
Signs of quality synthetic leather:
- Smooth, dense material without defects
- Flexible but rigid structure
- Abrasion resistance (at least 50,000 friction cycles)
- Uniform colour throughout the material
- Pleasant, natural-skin-like texture
- Water and stain repellent properties
- UV resistance
- Manufacturer's warranty and certificates
Lower-quality synthetic leather is often thinner, inflexible and can tear or fray easily. It can also discolour when exposed to UV radiation.
Quality upholstery requires a number of important consumables:
- Foam and foam materials in different densities (20-35 kg/m³ for furniture, 35-45 kg/m³ for car interiors) and thicknesses (2-15 cm), chosen according to the load and intensity of use.
- Synthetic foam and wadding as an additional layer of padding to help create smoother lines, available in different densities (100-300 g/m²).
- Fasteners including rivets and staples for padding, zippers, adhesive tapes, special cords and tapes for edging.
- Underlay materials such as cotton fabric as a base layer, non-woven fabric as an interlayer and wind-blocking material for car interiors.
The right choice and combination of consumables ensures a long-lasting and high-quality end result.
